The science of rainbows

🌈 How Do Rainbows Work?

Rainbows form when sunlight interacts with tiny water droplets in the air. When sunlight enters a droplet, it bends (this is called refraction), reflects off the back of the droplet, and then bends again as it exits. This process, called dispersion, splits white sunlight into its different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet or ROY G. BIV  for short.

Each color bends at a slightly different angle, which is why we see a beautiful curved arc. It’s amazing how red appears on the outside of the arc, while violet is on the inside.

Did you know that rainbows are actually full circles? This might surprise you! From the ground, we only see an arc because the Earth blocks the bottom half. But if you’re in a plane or helicopter, you might see a complete circular rainbow. How cool is that?

Rainbows form through the scattering, reflection, and refraction of sunlight through water droplets (or sometimes ice crystals). These droplets are usually shaped like teardrops, which helps create the effect.

Rainbows don’t just look incredible. They also help us understand how light and water interact in our atmosphere.

Civil Engineering Bridge Building

Kia ora

Today in the hall we had engineering, and it was awesome. Our first challenge was to work in groups and build the tallest tower using Jenga blocks. The room was full of energy as everyone stacked pieces as high as they could, trying to stop them from falling over.

Just when we thought we were finished, our teacher surprised us with a twist. She gave us a cloth and told us to put it under our towers to make it like we were building on uneven ground. Suddenly towers began to wobble, and some collapsed in seconds. Everyone was laughing and rushing to fix them.

Our next task was to build a bridge out of paper. It had to be strong enough to hold weight. We tested ideas, folded and layered sheets, and kept going even when our paper bridges bent or collapsed.

By the end of the session we were tired but proud. We had learned new skills and worked as a team, and for a moment we felt like real engineers.

Report Writing for day 3 of Engineering

My Class Engineering Report

Kia Ora

July 30  2025 was day 3 of our engineering studies. My group had to:

  • We had to transport water from one bucket to another bucket without spilling it.
  • We had to make a community and a wall to block the water and keep the island safe and not drowning

So that’s what we did yesterday see you next time

Kurt’s best 2 days

My Best 2 Days Ever!

One morning, I woke up and saw my mum quietly booking a hotel near the Skyline. I asked why, but she just smiled and said it was a secret. She told me to go back to sleep because I was going to have a big day tomorrow!

The next day, I woke up and found my auntie and uncle at my house. They said we were going to the Skyline! I was so excited. My uncle said it was a big amusement park, so I said, let’s go!

The drive was long—about 2 hours from Papakura to Rotorua Skyline—but it was worth it. When we got there, I had a fun ride and even fell asleep for about 50 minutes. When I woke up, I played on my phone for the rest of the trip.

Our hotel was nice and had a big park near the gate. The Skyline was just a 15-minute drive away. We celebrated New Year’s there, and I stayed up until 4 a.m.!

The next morning, we went to the Skyline at 9 a.m., took the gondola up the mountain, and then rode the luge down four times. It was so much fun before we headed home.

25, Kurt’s first time Kickball experience

Kia Ora

I am here to tell you all about my first time playing kickball. It is a fun game a team sport and league game, similar to baseball where you have to kick the ball and each team has 3 strikes and there are 2 modes in this game. The first one is the defender where you go on the field and try to catch the ball if you do catch the ball that is strike 1 if you’r team gets 3 strike you’re team is out and you and you’re team has to change to defender. if you are in the attacker team you can get many ways to be out and switch to defender when the balls roll to you and you failed to kick it that is 1 strike and if you kick the ball and someone catches it that is another strike

What would you do?

Do you think Kickball Is fun?
